Marine Insurance: The Hidden Yet Strategic Infrastructure of the Global Economy and Iran's Trade

The National Conference on Marine Insurance will be held on October 15, 2025, in Tehran

Tehran – The Secretariat of the National Conference on Marine Insurance announced:
As over 90% of global trade is conducted via the seas, marine insurance plays a vital role as a key pillar of the blue economy, ensuring the security of maritime transportation, reducing investment risks, and strengthening international supply chains.

According to the report published by the Conference Secretariat, specialized marine insurance—covering areas such as cargo, hull, port liability, and maritime accidents—not only provides risk coverage but also serves as a critical factor in stabilizing trade and advancing port and maritime activities.

The Experience of Leading Countries in Marine Insurance Development

The report highlights countries such as the United Kingdom, Norway, Singapore, and Greece as successful models in developing marine insurance infrastructure. These nations have leveraged financial, legal, and technological capacities to dominate international marine insurance markets and establish themselves as key players in the maritime economy.

Iran and Untapped Opportunities

According to conference officials, Iran—endowed with extensive northern and southern coastlines and a strategic location along East-West trade corridors—holds significant potential to become a regional hub for marine insurance. However, the low penetration of specialized insurance, regulatory gaps, and international constraints are among the key challenges hindering full utilization of this capacity.

Looking Ahead: Smart Insurance and Regional Development

The Secretariat also emphasized the importance of adopting modern technologies in the marine insurance industry. The integration of Internet of Things (IoT), satellite data, smart insurance systems, and the expansion of insurance coverage in free trade zones, commercial ports, and border areas can pave the way for a significant leap in Iran’s maritime and insurance sectors.

The report concludes:
Marine insurance is not merely a tool for risk coverage—it is a powerful enabler of the national economy in the face of global trade fluctuations and maritime risks. Strategic investment in this field could position Iran as one of the leading nations in the regional blue economy.
